St George Supports Local Headway

Headway Cambridgeshire’s community clients attending the monthly social and support group were very pleased to receive a donation to help support the setting up of the Wisbech Cognition Group.

On Tuesday 25 June the group were joined by Councillor Viv McCrae and Peter Dennis from the Fenland Branch of the Royal Society of St George, who presented a cheque donation £300. This was Peter’s first visit to the group and he was very pleased to meet the clients and learn about the support that Headway Cambridgeshire offers to clients in the Wisbech area.

The local branch of the Royal Society of St George had recently held a cabaret evening in order to raise funds in support of the charity.

The Wisbech social and support group meets on the last Tuesday of the month at The Case in Wisbech and includes adults with acquired brain injury and their carers and families. The group share their experiences as well as offering mutual support and an opportunity to socialise for those who might otherwise feel isolated.

However, this group of individuals who are not accessing any other form of rehabilitation support in Wisbech need more to help them overcome the long lasting effects on mobility, learning and memory that brain injury can cause.

Headway Cambridgeshire have been consulting the clients about what their rehabilitative needs are and the group aim to set up the Wisbech Cognition Group. Separate to the monthly social & support group, this would be a formalised service focusing on cognitive work, planning and organising skills to cope with memory problems, stress and fatigue, utilising a specialist rehabilitation worker in an appropriate venue.

With Headway Cambridgeshire, the group are actively fundraising to get this new service started and to secure the associated running costs for at least one year.

Jo Monk, Headway Cambridgeshire Community Brain Injury Advisor facilitates and supports the Wisbech social and support group. She said: “This donation is a wonderful example of local people supporting those in need in their own area. We very much appreciate this generous donation from the members of the Fenland Branch of the Royal Society of St George and the continuing support of Councillor Viv McCrae.”

We still have a long way to go in terms of fundraising but the group are one step closer to realising their goal of setting up the Wisbech Cognition Group. Thank you to all who are supporting the group.
