Headway Cambridgeshire has been Charity of the Year 2011/12 for the Fen-based Devil’s Dyke Morris Men.

On Thursday, 5 July the Morris Men performed at The Crown in Ashley, Suffolk, and presented a cheque to Headway Cambridgeshire to mark the end of their fundraising year.

The Morris Men mainly perform dances which originated in the Cotswold area wearing traditional white shirts and trousers sporting a crossed orange band across their chests and bells on their legs. The group chose to support Headway after they lost a number of their members to unexpected and untimely deaths.

Christopher Harris, spokesperson for the group says: “The loss of our dancing colleagues has made us all the more aware that our joy in dancing derives from our ability to use our skills and our physical strength. We have chosen to support Headway Cambridgeshire this year because we know their work is so valuable in helping people to recover following brain injury. We are delighted to be able to assist a little in this work.”

The group have performed in pubs and at events across Cambridgeshire and Suffolk throughout the year and have raised £1000 for Headway at these events.

Karen Bevan, Headway’s Fundraiser, said: “We have enjoyed the patronage of the Devils Dyke Morris Men during this year – it has been such a fun and colourful way of raising funds for us! We rely upon the support of groups in the community like the Devils Dyke Morris Men not only for fundraising but also for helping to raise awareness of the issues around brain injury.

“£1000 will go a long way to help us to develop our services to clients in the community and also to those who attend our day services. We are very grateful to Christopher and all members of the group for their support.”
