Independence
1:1 Support
Our 1:1 service supports clients who have a goal to help them be more independent in their home or community. Here is an example of how our trained staff can offer support:
Mike was badly injured in a car accident that left him in a coma for a week and needing three months treatment at Addenbrooke’s hospital.
Just 29 years old, he came to Headway Cambridgeshire with cognitive difficulties that were having a substantial impact on his life.
Mike reported problems with attention and concentration, poor short term memory, slowed information processing and very poor planning skills. He was also sometimes impulsive, not thinking through the consequence of his actions and lacked motivation, often staying in bed until 2 – 3pm.
Wanting to be less dependent on his family and eventually looking to find employment, Mike met with his Headway Cambridgeshire support worker once a week. He had support for four months from Headway Cambridgeshire, working on the following goals:
-
Re-learning how to use public transport
-
Learning how to use the local library
-
Meal planning
-
Budgeting
-
Shopping
-
Researching and identifying appropriate community activities
-
Support into volunteering
In addition to the practical support Mike received, he also benefited from an increase in his motivation, self-esteem and confidence.
“I just wanted to say thank you for coming to see me yesterday. I knew the form would be difficult for me to complete but your help was wonderful.” Marianne, Headway client
