Volunteering with YourTime

What is YourTime?

A groundbreaking service from Headway Cambridgeshire that aims to make a difference to the lives of people with an acquired brain injury.

A free service for adults with an acquired brain injury, living in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough who, with some support from a trained volunteer, could become more independent.

An innovative project through which volunteers are trained to support individuals with an acquired brain injury, towards achieving greater independence.

The service offers personal one-to-one support to help clients access opportunities within their own community.

It enables clients to achieve short term goals independently, for example:

  • Learn or re-learn to use public transport
  • Access sports facilities or a local gym
  • Find out about and enrol onto a college course
  • Access volunteering or employment
  • Discover and join a new social group

How does YourTime work?

Referrals to the scheme are accepted from:

  • Prospective clients
  • Someone acting on behalf of a prospective client, with their permission: e.g. a relative, advocate or friend
  • Headway's own day-service or community teams
  • GPs and other professionals

Once accepted onto the scheme clients will:

  • Be introduced to a trained volunteer
  • Agree a plan about how they are going to achieve their goal
  • Decide when, where and how often they will meet with their appointed volunteer
  • Arrange regular progress meetings with the project co-ordinator

How YourTime has helped

'Robert' wanted to get back to work. A trained volunteer enabled him to gain the skills he needed to secure a volunteer placement as a stepping stone to full employment.

He told Headway Cambridgeshire that he was very pleased with the outcome of his experience with YourTime.

"I think it's all coming together now"

'Robert', YourTime client
