New Fenland Social & Support Group

Wednesday 7 April saw the inaugural meeting of Headway Cambridgeshire's new Fenland Social & Support Group for those living with the effects of brain injury. The group will be supported by Headway's Community Brain Injury Advisors and will meet on the first Wednesday of each month at The Star Public House, The Avenue, March.

The first meeting was attended by some very enthusiastic brain injury survivors, their family and carers, many of whom had helped to plan the meeting arrangements. The first group meeting, joined by Headway's CEO Andrew Gardner also welcomed Councellor Mac Cotterell MBE, Deputy Leader of Fenland District Council. Everyone enjoyed the first meeting and the group are looking forward to future events.

The aim of the social & support group is to provide a relaxed environment within the local community where individuals with a brain injury, family, partners and carers can get together to enjoy a meal or a drink, meet new people and share experiences and support. The group have lots of ideas for future meetings and are looking forward to welcoming new members.

The Community Brain Injury team now help four social & support groups across Cambridgeshire.
Making Headway in the Community is funded by The Big Lottery Fund.

Lending Library receives a Head start!

A new project launched by Headway Cambridgeshire has been given a kick start by the Rotarians of St Neots. A cheque for £1000 was presented to Headway's Chief Executive, Andrew Gardner, to launch a Utensils Lending Library. The aim of the project is to help increase the independence of Headway clients in their own homes by loaning specialist equipment to be tried out at home with support from Headway's Occupational Therapist and members of the Community Team.

President of the Rotary Club of St Neots, Gordon Johnston, said "As a keen motorcyclist, I am aware that a large number of accidents on the road result in brain trauma. The work of Headway Cambridgeshire is invaluable to the community to promote recovery and rehabilitation for people who are living with the effects of brain injury." Andrew Gardner said, "We are delighted to receive this donation that will help us get this exciting new project off the ground. We are now able to purchase the special equipment for people with disabilities that will make everyday tasks easier to do. This project will follow on from our Life Skills programme at our Headway Centres in Cambridge, Huntingdon, Peterborough and March. We are grateful to the Rotarians for their support"

You can find out more about the Rotarians of St Neots on their website. Read more about the work of Headway Cambridge's Occupational Therapist.

New direction for Headway Cambridgeshire Radio Show

A group of Headway Cambridgeshire service users had been broadcasting their own show once a month since January 2008 on a local radio station - 209 Radio. The team had been meeting once a week to learn the skills and techniques necessary to put together a show, which involved planning, script-writing, public speaking and interviewing as well as technical requirements.

All were disappointed when 209 Radio were unable to keep going despite all their hard work and have now ceased broadcasting. That means the end of the monthly Headway Cambridgeshire radio broadcasts scheduled for the rest of the year. All agree however, that their hard work and new-found skills will not go to waste as they're still brimming with ideas for topics to cover. The team are currently looking into the equipment and skills necessary to launch their own podcast. The new show, when launched may be shorter but will continue to cover a variety of topics, serious and fun, as well as music and competitions. We look forward to hearing more from them soon.
