A member can be referred to us by any person who
has a responsibility for caring for them. This might be a hospital,
doctor, social worker, or carer.
The prospective member is then invited to Headway
House in Cambridge for an informal session of a couple of hours to see
for themselves what it is like. They can then choose to come for a day
or part of a day where they have an opportunity to get involved in
activities. They will be supervised informally by a member of staff who
will, at the end of the day, ask whether they would like to come on a
regular basis. The prospective member is under no pressure to join - it
is entirely voluntary.
The member tries activities for a month and then,
if they are enjoying the experience, we work out a weekly programme
with them, which includes attendance on specific days on which they
will take part in activities, with regular breaks, lunch, and social
sessions.
We recognise that establishing a regular routine
is beneficial for members and an important part of getting their self
esteem back and we encourage them to keep to the programme. We talk
every day with members and observe their progress.
