Meaningful Activities

Meaningful Activities

8th November, 2017

My Name is Susanna and I am an Occupational Therapist.

A typical day for me at Headway Cambridgeshire involves seeing clients in the community to help them overcome barriers to doing the things they want to do.

One lady that I visit has lost her confidence in using public transport since her brain injury so we spent time planning to take the bus to the local town and then I went with her for the first time.  I will support her in working towards doing this on her own in the future by planning ahead and starting with smaller trips and working up to being completely independent using the bus.

Another client wants to work on making his garden more accessible so that he can spend time there and encourage wildlife.  We have spent a great deal of time researching garden furniture that is a suitable height and sturdy enough for him to lean on when he gets up and down and we have had to be quite creative in finding solutions to some of the practical problems he faces day to day.  The table and bench are now installed and he is very happy with them and, as a bonus, a hedgehog has taken residence in his garden!

No two days and no two clients are the same and there is great satisfaction in helping someone engage in meaningful activities which improve their quality of life.

Thank you for the support and advice that you have been giving my husband. This has in turn taken a lot of pressure off me and has helped me through his bad days and angry spells.
