My Name is Angela and I am an Occupational Therapist working with people who have experienced a brain injury in their home and community.
DESCRIBE A TYPICAL DAY.
I will visit clients in their homes and in the community to assist them with their goals relating to daily living activities. These can include using the OT toolkit to demonstrate appropriate equipment that can enable a client to develop cooking skills; increase their independence with shopping (including planning and organising shopping requirements, managing public transport and negotiating around a busy supermarket); and finding meaningful and realistic local voluntary opportunities.
WHAT NEEDS DO PEOPLE WITH BRAIN INJURIES HAVE?
One of the main reasons for choosing to work in this field is the varied nature of the role. This is due to the many effects that can occur following a brain injury, including, mobility difficulties, problems with remembering everyday matters, and struggling to manage their emotions.
WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES OF YOUR JOB?
Making sure I am keeping on top of notes, goals, outcome measures and continued professional development. However, Headway is really supportive in these areas, providing in-house and external training opportunities to ensure I keep up-to-date with current practice.
WHAT ARE THE BEST PARTS OF YOUR JOB?
I love working alongside a client to increase their awareness and helping them to address their functional difficulties and develop their independence in areas that are important to them. I am amazed by the creative ways in which people overcome the barriers that are the result of their impairments, and I am always very proud and honoured to play a small part in their journey to maximising their potential and becoming occupied again.
WHAT DO YOU FEEL ABOUT WORKING AT HEADWAY CAMBRIDGESHIRE?
I feel immensely proud to be part of a fantastic team who are all striving towards the same goal: to provide the best possible support for those who have suffered a brain injury.

“ The Hospital Brain Injury Co-ordinator became someone who absolutely understood how I felt, I didn’t need to explain. I could talk about my fears and worries. She was such a great support through the difficult days, but could also celebrate the small step successes, which was important to me. ”
