Hub Service Volunteer: Peterborough

Can you spare some time on a regular basis to help out at our social rehabilitation service for adults with brain injury?

Headway Cambridgeshire provides specialist support across the whole of Cambridgeshire, for those affected by brain injury. Our services include social rehabilitation programmes in Cambridge and Peterborough, information advice and support at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and in the community; and one-to-one community support.

‘Brain Injury’ has various causes. For example: a blow to the head in a road accident, fall or attack; a stroke, brain tumour, brain infection such as meningitis, or anything that causes lack of oxygen to the brain. After a year, around 90% of people have made an excellent physical recovery, but may be left with such difficulties as loss of confidence, poor memory & concentration; or difficulty in planning & decision making.

Volunteers are a crucial part of the smooth running of our organisation, supporting our staff in activity sessions and client breaks. Volunteers may assist staff either working one-to-one with clients who require extra support, or with small groups of clients. Structured morning sessions include Life Skills, Cognitive Activities, Gardening, Art and Creative Group, while in the afternoon volunteers lead sessions such as Scrabble, IT and Aerobics. We also welcome new ideas for sessions, depending upon the skills and experience volunteers bring to the role.

Volunteering for Headway requires a regular commitment of time. Ideally this would be on a weekly basis, from 9.30-15.00, on a Monday or a Wednesday.

We are looking for people who:

  • are confident, self- motivated and able to take the initiative
  • have a friendly manner
  • have good communication skills
  • are able to work cooperatively as part of a team
  • are patient & will listen to the wishes and preferences of the person they support
  • will treat people with respect and will keep all personal information about clients confidential.
  • can enable people to become as independent as possible rather than doing things for them
  • are reliable and can offer a regular commitment

Volunteers need to be 18 or over, and will be subject to a DBS check.

Full induction and training will be provided, and expenses paid.

Based at Headway Cambridgeshire at Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall Hospice, PE3 6LW.
